Morning Exercises in the Nuthouse
Užupis is a neighbourhood located in the outskirts of Vilnius’ Old Town. Užupis means “on the other side of the river” in Lithuanian language and refers to the Vilnia River. The name Vilnius was derived from the Vilnia. Užupis is popular with artists, and has been compared to Montmartre in Paris due to its bohemian atmosphere. The district houses art galleries, artists’ workshops, and cafés. On April Fools Day in 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis), replete with an army of 12 personnel. Užupis is largely characterized by dilapidated buildings, courtyards and cobblestone streets that haven‘t been renovated for decades. But when the music reverberates over the cobbles in the late evenings you will certainly fall in love with this unique part of Vilnius. The atmosphere – filled with love, music, smells and happy people – will certainly catch your soul…

Užupis is an urban area of Vilnius characterized by dilapidated buildings, courtyards and side streets that haven‘t been renovated for decades. But when the music reverberates over the cobbles in the late evenings I am convinced that you will fall in love with this unique part of Vilnius city. Užupis was declared as independent Republic in 1997. The atmosphere – filled with love, music, smells and happy people – will certainly catch your soul. When you at late night again cross the river Vilnia I think you’re going to do it with a big smile and renewed appreciation of the exceptionally many exciting adventures and stories Lithuania has to offer…

After one or two years in Eastern-Europe, sometimes one might hear, “there is nothing else quite like …”:
– noticing that everything available for sale is always junk, always from China, that is always junk . . .
– trying to understand how to use an expensive, German-designed vacuum cleaner; to make us more thankful that they did not win the last two World Wars . . .
– cooking on a kitchen gas-stove from Russia with heat controls that function either ‘on’ or ‘off’, and nothing-in-between . . .
– wrestling with an old refrigerator from Minsk that makes us be nice with all of our neighbors, in the hope that someday some necessary six of them will help us lift it so we can finally throw it out . . .

It’s again set for party and celebration of the independent Republic of Užupis in Vilnius. Fourteen years have passed since this centrally located city district declared secession and independence from the Republic of Lithuania, and 1 April 1997 is now celebrated every year as the very Constitutional Date of this genuine, fascinating bohemian republic right on the other side of the river Vilnia. It takes no more than five minutes to walk there from the old town of Vilnius, so on Friday afternoon this week, all of you, dear VilNews readers, are warmly welcome to participate in the spring’s biggest and most colourful festival here in Vilnius!

{Responding to two (2) E-mails, received on the same day of spring 2006. One from a former classmate from my university graduate-school (Boston, Massachusetts), whom I’ve not seen in 35 years . . . who probably has no idea where is or what is Lithuania . . . The second from an old political protégé (Ottawa, Canada), from my days working with Canada’s Official Languages groups, whom I’ve not seen in 6 years . . . who probably has no idea where is or what is Lithuania . . . }

Wyman Brent Wyman Brent is not like California Baptists in general. Several years ago he fell in love with Vilnius, now living here permanently. “I plan to live here for the rest of my life,” he says. His great passion in life is Jewish books – books written by or about Jews. Therefore, he has over the latest years bought more than 5,000 such books and taken them to Vilnius to open a Jewish library. Read his own story about motives and ideals for a meaningful life.
