“Let's do it” by Cole Porter
From the Show: Paris 1928
Birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
In Spain, the best upper sets do it
Lithuanians and Letts do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it
Not to mention the Fins
Folks in Siam do it - think of Siamese twins
Some Argentines, without means, do it
People say in Boston even beans do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
Romantic sponges, they say, do it
Oysters down in oyster bay do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
Cold Cape Cod clams, 'gainst their wish, do it
Even lazy jellyfish, do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
Electric eels I might add do it
Though it shocks em I know
Why ask if shad do it - Waiter bring me
"shad roe"
In shallow shoals English soles do it
Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

It's no wonder that Cole Porter uses the word Lithuanian. Many of his fellow composers and musicians in New York at that time were immigrants from what was then Russia. However, while studying history of music in 1953-55, my professor Leon Stein (of Jewish descent) would always point out to me those who were born in Vilnius. They came to New York, worked on "the Tin Pan Alley", composed American musicals and put American music on the world map. Their biographies often show their birthplaces as Russia. But that is because at that time Lithuania was occupied by it. We should have many more bronze plaques marking their birthplaces in Vilnius than just the one for Jascha Heifetz. Also, what about painters such as Jaques Lipschitz, (Chagall?) or writers known to the world. We really need a researcher to get to work on this.
